The standard wheelbase Chrysler Voyager eC has been positioned as the most affordable minivan in the market. With a base MSRP of only $16,355, the new minivan "...offer(s) the lowest point of entry for young families in the market for an affordable minivan," said James C. Schroer, executive vice president, Global Sales & Marketing, Chrysler Group.

According to Schroer, "Approximately 75 percent of minivan shoppers use the internet to gather information before visiting their local dealers to compare and make their purchase. Our e-strategy offers consumers attractive, complete, high-value models in critical parts of the minivan segment."

Built exclusively at the automaker's St. Louis, Mo., South, assembly plant, the entry-level Voyager minivan was rebadged a Chrysler last year to become the "gateway" to the nameplate's minivan lineup. Powered by a strong 2.4L 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine and mated to the 41AE four-speed automatic transmission, the eC is all about value and above average performance.

A partial equipment roster includes dual manual sliding doors, power brakes, power steering, full length floor carpeting, grocery bag hooks - rear seatback, five passenger seating, front and rear 12V power outlets, AM/FM/Cassette audio system, tinted glass windows and rear intermittent washer/wiper system.

Consumers may want to consider adding the following options at the very least to make this minivan completely functional: power door locks ($315), rear window defroster ($195) and seven passenger seating ($450).

On the road, this minivan can go! Smooth and quiet, it is no slouch on the Interstate at speed. Responsive and willing, this entry-level drivetrain gives an impressive performance. Suspension hardware includes iso struts with integral gas-charged shock absorbers, coil springs, asymmetrical lower control arms, stabilizer bar, urethane jounce bumpers and a link rubber-isolated cast aluminum cross member.

The rear suspension is configured with rubber-isolated longitudinal single-leaf springs, tubular beam axle, track bar and gas charged shock absorbers. P215/70R15 BSW all season tires keep this minivan firmly glued to the road.

Inside the cabin, displays and controls for the driver are easy to read and use. The view of the road as well as side view is impressive. The interior is filled with many thoughtful touches that might be expected in a foreign car like plenty of cup holders and cubbyholes for stuff, and handholds in the ceiling to ease entry and exit.

Ratings & specifications

The engine performance numbers are 150 hp at 5,200 rpm and 167 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The EPA fuel economy figures are 20 city/24 highway using regular unleaded gasoline. Towing is not recommended by the manufacturer. Underhood fluids are clearly marked and easy to reach.

Standard safety items include dual front airbags and high strength steel side guard door beams. Side supplemental airbags are $3,990 additional. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes and traction control are not offered on this model.
